Mr. Seifert will discuss the original DEC-Intel-Xerox Ethernet development and the evolution of network standards over the past 30 years. From early battles between Ring, Star, and Bus topologies through the market war among Ethernet, Token Ring, and ATM, he will provide insight into why some technologies succeed and others fail. As a test of that insight, he will revisit his 2001 proclamation of "Stupid Network Ideas" to see where he was right and where he wasn’t.

Most security is designed to keep honest people honest.  Not surprisingly, most vulnerabilities are the result of systems being used and abused in a way never anticipated by the author. Users have an innate ability to find workarounds to any security roadblocks — real and perceived. Yet that same human nature that drives us to find workarounds can be harnessed as a means of exposing opportunities for improvement. Despite (security) being a hot topic these days, the likely result of ever-more-sophisticated attacks and a greatly expanded surface area upon which to attack, most people simply don't take it as seriously as they should.

Registered Sharkfest '13 attendees are encouraged to stay at the dorms at Clark Kerr Campus, a Spanish mission style complex located on campus and just steps away from the conference. Room blocks have also been reserved at the Shattuck and Durant Hotels, listed below. The two and three-bedroom suites are fully furnished and have attractive living rooms along with one or two bathrooms that are shared by the occupants of the suite. Each lockable bedroom includes a bed with fresh linen, duvets and towels. There are laundry rooms and vending machines located in the complex.

Each attendee will get his/her own room. The common space, which includes the living room and bathrooms, are shared in the suites.

Parking
